If you want to complete the legacy mission and actually unlock the legacy bonus, this is the last thing you want to do and you would of wasted your last 20 hours or so, unless continuing on is. Completing the last part of the Legacy questline will result in you seeing the credits and State of Decay 2 officially ‘ending.’ However, by completing the Legacy mission, you’ll have unlocked a Boon for a future playthrough (again this varies depending on your leader).
I just finished a (trader) legacy and after you finish, your game on that map ends. You then get a legacy card and start fresh. Here is where you need to watch out. You can use characters that were in that legacy game in any fresh game. But they come over with all the items in their inventory. I did not know this and wasted a lot of potential. You can load up your characters with all the best gear in your supply and then finish the legacy. This allows you to start fresh with that sick gun, all the ammo and healing items.
EDIT: To fully complete a legacy you must first assign a leader. You cannot switch leaders after so pick carefully. Then you must do the legacy quests given to the leader and while doing those quests. Destroy all 10 plague hearts. To unlock the final parts of the quest you need to destroy all 10. There will be points where your leader will not have quests, just get other survivors and do other tasks. The game will give you quests as you go.
I would suggest loading your characters with essentials like portable generators and other base mods and rucksacks. As well as your best weapons like 50 cal and ammo. Your entire supply locker does not transfer.
There will be a pop up when you are on the final mission of the legacy that will say something like 'Do you want to continue on this quest? if you do you will not be able to reload this map'. You can select no, load up your hero characters, and then go back and complete the quest.
When you start a fresh game, you will be able to select up to 2 legacy boons. You will then have an option of choosing 3 legacy characters and/or 3 random. I picked 2 legacy characters, and 1 random.
Also note that my legacy characters were half health and when I started fresh, they were still at half heath. So it would be a good idea to heal them first.
You get 4000 influence and a friendly trader.
TL;DR: Before completing legacy, transfer all your good items to your best characters. Their inventory transfers over to fresh game.
As you move through the levels of State of Decay 2, you will eventually reach the point where you need to appoint a Leader of your community. There are 4 options to choose from: Builder, Sheriff, Trader and Warlord, each with its own list of tasks to perform. Once you have completed all of the leader's tasks, you'll have access to the appropriate Legacy Boon that you'll be able to use when creating a new community. A Legacy Boon consists of several gifts that you receive at the start of the game (or periodically, each day), giving you a small advantage at the very beginning of your adventure.

What's more, the sounds produced by the operations in the base will not affect the Threat meter. With this Legacy Boon you'll be able to expand your base without having to worry about water and electricity.

With this Legacy Boon you will have access to a friendly merchant and up to 4000 Influence Points to use for shopping once you have set up your new community. Making such large purchases at the very beginning of the game will help you strengthen the community.
Mobilization Legacy Boon - Warlord
This Legacy Boon will give you a giant pile of ammunition, grenades and additional firearms once you have set up your first base. If you like to use guns and grenades, you'll have a really powerful arsenal at the start of the game so you can easily cope with larger clusters of Zombies.
